Description: 1860 CDV OF ADELE DOUGLAS, WIFE OF SENATOR STEPHEN DOUGLAS BY BRADY. Up for auction is a original 1860 CDV of Adele Douglas , wife of Illinois Senator Stephen Douglas,noted for the Lincoln-Douglas Debates in 1858 and as the Democratic Party Presidential Candidate in 1860 . The image of Adele Douglas on the mount shows her posing sideways in a chair with rich albumin tones , sharp focus and strong contrast. There is very minor soiling and corner wear of the mount The CDV image is in good condition considering it’s age. The backmark of the mount has the Anthony- Brady imprint. Annotated in pencil is Miss Douglas . Historical footnotes on Adele ( Cutts) Douglas ( 1835 - 1899 ) was a famous Washington beauty who became the loyal and valuable second wife of Senator Stephen A. Douglas. Her father was the nephew of Dolley Madison ,whose Lafayette Square mansion became Adele Cutts second home. Her mother ‘s sister , Rose Greenhow, also an important hostess , later convicted of spying for the CONFEDERACY . Adele was at Stephen Douglas side during his debates with Abraham Lincoln in Illinois and the presidential campaign that followed in 1860. Tall, with chestnut hair , and universally acclaimed beauty, Adele “ Addie” Cutts ,age 20, married Stephen Douglas in Washington in 1856 . She was his second wife and he almost twice his age. In 1857, Stephen Douglas and Adele built a mansion in Washington which became the center of its social scene. Together they commanded substantial political power. When Senator Stephen A.Douglas died in 1861 at age 48. In spite of mourning her husband’s death , Adele Cutts Douglas volunteered her services in D.C. hospitals during the Civil War. Five years after Stephen Douglas death , Adele married Captain Robert Williams a career army officer from Virginia who remained loyal to the Union . She took on the role of life of an army wife ,raising their six children in the western territories. Adele Cutts Douglas Williams died in 1899.
