Near perfect centering Nice corners Clean back Giel was credited with seven years of Major league service after signing with the Giants in ‘54 as a bonus baby. Therefore, he sat all year in New York in ‘54 as a requirement of his status as a bonus baby signee. The next two years Giel was obligated to join the military as a requirement of his draft status. It wasn’t until ‘58 that Giel would return to the Giants, albeit in San Francisco, where the Giants now played on the west coast. The adage, ‘ you can’t go back home’ Giel seemed to learn earlier than most. But it didn’t hold, for Giel pitched sparingly in the majors after he posted a high of 91 innings in ‘58. Thereafter, he never came close to that number of innings pitched again, in a single season, regardless for whom he played. By ‘62, he was out of baseball, and presumably back home again, after all.
