Description: Annie Marlowe, and Other Stories Published by T. Y. Crowell, NY, 1880s, 112 pages. Undated (circa 1880). Original reddish-brown cloth, decorative black stamping and illustration on front cover, with black and gilt on spine. Published around 1880, inferred by the address of the publishing house of Thomas Y. Crowell, which was located at 744 Broadway between 1876 and 1881. This children's book has an ornate front cover and on the print pages you can clearly see the indentations of the print on the opposite side, an indication of early printing techniques being used. Marks on the inside cover include a name (too faint to read) under which I can read "Teacher", a pencil mark that is possibly a price, a child's name in pencil, and a blue stamp for the bookseller's shop "Geo. R. Cornwell, Books, Stationery, Wall Paper, &c, Penn Yan, NY" The book includes one illustration on the cover and one in the center of the book accompanying the story "Lulu and Muff". This little book definitely shows its age. There is the expected wear to the cover, the binding is loose with a few pages completely unbound, there are several different pencil markings on the inside front cover, a little pencil drawing inside the back cover, pages show some heavy smudging and general soiling and one torn page in the interior (does not interfere with print of book).
